Program goals
The NeighborHealth Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Residency Program aims to achieve the following goals:
1. Support new graduate or newly certified PMHNPs to practice high-quality and patient-centric psychiatric care.
2. Nurture the skills of highly committed PMHNPs to fill gaps in behavioral health and provide top-quality mental health support services to everyone, especially underserved communities.
3. Increase job satisfaction and retention of new psychiatric nurse practitioners who are dedicated to serving in the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) setting.
4. Equip the next generation of behavioral healthcare leaders with the skills and mindset to pioneer innovative approaches to behavioral health and wellness for their patients.
Program description
NeighborHealth’s Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Residency Program is a 12-month, full-time, salaried postgraduate training program designed for PMHNP Residents seeking advanced clinical and professional development in community-focused psychiatric care. The Residency provides structured, supervised, hands-on clinical training and didactics to support new graduates (within 18 months of graduation) in delivering individualized, evidence-based, patient centered psychiatric care across the lifespan, while respecting patients’ backgrounds, needs, preferences, and life experiences.
Applicant qualifications
- Recent graduate (or nearing graduation) or newly certified PMHNPs (within 18 months of graduation) from an accredited Graduate Nursing program with Massachusetts licensure and ANCC or AANP board certification by July 1.
- Applicants must not have previously worked in a PMHNP role prior to the start of the residency program.
- All applicants are required to have their Massachusetts Advanced Practice License, Federal DEA, and MA Controlled Substances Registration (MCSR) prior to starting clinical sessions.
- Dedication to providing culturally sensitive mental health care in FQHC or underserved settings.
- Commitment to completing the full 12-month Residency program.
- Applicant must be a US citizen or a foreign national with a Visa permitting permanent residency in the US, or a non-citizen national. Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible.
Program structure
Full-time, 40 hours per week, including:
- Precepted clinical sessions across multiple sites and departments, including general psychiatry, integrated behavioral health, Pediatric Psychiatry, Recovery Services, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Behavioral Health Urgent Care.
- Allocated time for administrative clinical follow-up, didactic learning, and QI projects.

- Copy of RN and NP Massachusetts license and Board Certification (ANCC/AANP)
- Applicants are screened by the PMHNP Residency Selection Committee. After screening, applicants may be invited for interviews.
- Once accepted into the residency, applicants will meet all employment requirements of their residency employer and must provide their NPI to NeighborHealth.
